Winter tires and snow tires are the same thing: two names for a tire built with a soft compound that stays flexible in the cold and a tread cut with thousands of small biting edges. The compound is the important part. Below roughly 7 degrees Celsius an all-season tire hardens toward plastic and loses grip whether there is snow on the ground or not.

In Calgary that threshold arrives in early October and does not leave until April. That is six months of the year where a winter tire stops you shorter, and stopping distance on ice is where winter collisions are won or lost. All weather tires are the middle path, and they have improved enormously. They carry the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol, which is a real severe-snow performance standard rather than a marketing claim, while still behaving like a normal touring tire in July.

The honest trade-off: an all weather tire will not stop as short on sheet ice as a dedicated winter tire. What you get instead is no changeover twice a year, no storage problem, and no October scramble. For a city driver doing moderate mileage on plowed roads, that is often the better overall deal. For anyone commuting long distances in winter or driving highways out of town, we still recommend two dedicated sets.

An all season tire is a three-season tire. It has no severe-snow certification, and its compound stiffens in the cold like any summer rubber. The name is an accident of marketing history and it puts people on the wrong tires every winter.

That does not make them bad tires. From April through October they ride quietly, last a long time and grip well in the wet, and running them for those months means your winter set is not wearing out on warm pavement. Use them as the summer half of a two-set setup, not as a year-round solution. If you have been searching for “summer tires,” this is the category. We just sell it under its accurate name, all season, rather than a separate summer-only line.

Look at the sidewall of the tire you have now. You will find something like 225/65R17 102H. The same figures appear on a sticker inside your driver's door jamb.

• 225: tread width in millimetres
• 65: sidewall height as a percentage of the width
• R: radial construction, which is almost everything on the road
• 17: wheel diameter in inches
• 102: load rating, how much weight the tire can carry
• H: speed rating
