About the Continental IceContact XTRM
The IceContact XTRM is a studded tire, and studs remain the most effective thing yet invented for gripping hard ice. Continental sets the studs in a pattern designed to keep several in contact through a braking event rather than clustering them, which is what separates a good studded tire from a noisy one. This is the tire for drivers heading out of the city on rural roads that never get cleared, or anyone whose driveway and side streets stay sheet ice from December through March. The trade-off is noise on bare pavement and faster wear if you drive mostly dry roads, so it is a specialist choice rather than a default.
